So how often should you wash your siding?
For most homes, once a year is enough. If your home is surrounded by trees, near a busy road, or receives little sunlight, you may benefit from washing it every 6 to 12 months to prevent dirt and algae from building up.
Keeping your siding clean not only improves curb appeal but can also help extend its lifespan by preventing contaminants from sitting on the surface for long periods.
Should You Pressure Wash Your Siding?
In most cases, no.
Pressure washers may seem like the fastest way to clean your siding, but they can actually do more harm than good if used incorrectly.
High-pressure water can:
Force water behind the siding, where it can become trapped inside the wall.
Damage painted finishes.
Crack or loosen vinyl siding panels.
Damage trim, caulk, and flashing.
Void manufacturer warranties if cleaning instructions aren't followed.

The Best Way to Wash Siding

Start at the bottom of the wall and work your way up to help prevent streaking. Once you've cleaned a section, rinse thoroughly before the cleaning solution has a chance to dry. For tougher mildew or algae stains, always follow the siding manufacturer's recommended cleaning instructions.
Can You Pressure Wash LP® SmartSide® Siding?
This is one of the most common questions homeowners ask.
LP SmartSide should not be cleaned with a pressure washer.
LP recommends cleaning its siding with mild soap, water, and a soft brush or cloth. High-pressure washing can damage the factory finish, force water into joints, and reduce the long-term performance of the siding.

What About Vinyl Siding?

Because vinyl siding is designed to allow moisture to drain, spraying water upward or directly into the laps can push water where it doesn't belong.
A garden hose and soft brush are usually all that's needed for routine cleaning.
